Scientists hope a lifelike robot named Zeno can help diagnose and treat children with autism. Dan Popa, who directs the Next Generation Systems group at the UT Arlington Research Institute, is developing robots that are smaller, less expensive, and more intelligent than current models.

Zeno has empathetic eyes in a beautiful hazel hue and can walk and gesture with two hands. His lifelike skin is called Frubber frown, and look inquisitive. and allows his face to smile, But he doesn’t make judgments.

We designed and implemented a proof-of-concept prototype by which cerebrospinal ventricular shunt monitoring for blockage becomes a reality. Our platform does not interfere with the normal operation of the shunt and can be easily adopted by almost any of the shunts in the market. Our proposed system uses flexible MEMS flow sensors with embedded computation and a short-range wireless transceiver.

Prototype of the e-strip, which uses an IC chip developed at UTD, has been created for the Diagnostics of Diabetes. This salivary test checks a number of diabetes markers, is non-invasive, painless, and inexpensive. Researchers are testing effectiveness of the salivary test compared to the standard blood test. The goal is to develop 400 sensors to place in a diabetes patient’s shoe to monitor the pressure on their foot and ultimately prevent foot ulcers from developing. The technology is unique because it is designed to measure the pressure and shear on the foot at the same time. The researchers have completed the design of the sensors and have fabricated IC components. (more…)

Gastroparesis is a devastating digestive disorder characterized by impaired gastric motility, affecting more than 5 million Americans. Gastroparesis arises frequently in diabetic, post-surgical patients and cancer patients who go through chemotherapy. The symptoms includes nausea, vomiting, pain, early satiety and bloating, varies in combination and severity, and can be chronic and drug-refractory, imposing a severe burden on patients and families. Current treatment options are inconsistent and inadequate resulting in a gravely diminished quality of life and increased mortality.
